40 exceptional perfume houses

PlanèteBeauty carries 40 niche perfume houses, 213 fragrances in all. The oldest was founded in 1775; the youngest date from 2020 onwards. Some hand their formulas to the most sought-after perfumers in the trade and name them; others compose themselves, in their own laboratory, by hand. This page says, for each one, where it comes from, who makes it and what it does differently. No fact appears here that the house does not state on its own site.

AB SIGNATURE PARIS 3 fragrances

Its Collection Architecturale takes the monuments of Paris as its motif and turns them into extraits concentrated at 25%. The bottle is a faience case. Every creation shares one base, which the house presents as its signature.

AMOUAGE 7 fragrances

The Sultanate of Oman gave itself a perfume house in 1983, at the initiative of the Albusaidi family. It draws on a country that was once a trading place for frankincense and myrrh, and sets itself the project of the gift of kings. It does not name its perfumers: it says they work in Paris, Grasse, Geneva and New York.

ATELIER MATERI 8 fragrances

Véronique Le Bihan came from Brittany to found her house. A single natural raw material lies at the heart of each fragrance. She speaks as much of the gestures of those who transform it as of the material itself.

BADAR 5 fragrances

The house sets French haute parfumerie and Arabian perfumery in conversation. Its founder gives perfumers one instruction only: no constraints. He signed Sandal Gold with Margaux Le Paih-Guérin and Oriental Rida with Sébastien Cresp.

BDK 6 fragrances

David Benedek was born in Paris in 1989. He founded his house there in 2016, in the Palais-Royal district. Each fragrance begins with the choice of a single raw material, which becomes the starting point of the composition.

BY KILIAN 9 fragrances

Kilian Hennessy launched his house in 2007 with ten fragrances. Every bottle has been refillable from the start — “true luxury should last forever”. He grew up among his family's cognac cellars, whose evaporation has a name: the angels' share.

D’ANNAM 12 fragrances

Nick Hoang left Vietnam for New York, and missed the country enough to make a collection of it. Chapter 1: Enchanting Vietnam is entrusted to local perfumers. Each year the house gives part of its earnings to charities for Vietnamese children.

EMINENCE I MATTI 3 fragrances

The shop is in Naples; the house belongs to the Russo family. Gino Russo has been composing for forty years; his daughter Valentina runs the commercial side. The house describes the I Matti line as a dive towards scents that no longer exist.

ESSENTIAL PARFUMS 6 fragrances

Géraldine Archambault founded the house in 2018 on a subtraction: take out of the price what it judges incidental — packaging, marketing, middlemen — and keep the budget for the formula. The bottles refill. It names its perfumers: Dominique Ropion, Calice Becker, Quentin Bisch, Nathalie Lorson.

EX NIHILO 4 fragrances

In store, a machine called the Osmologue lets a fragrance be altered to order: it is then weighed, filtered and bottled by hand. The house was created in 2013 by Sylvie Loday, Olivier Royère and Benoît Verdier.

FEDERICO CANTELLI EXCLUSIVE COLLECTION 1 fragrance

At Monte San Pietro, near Bologna, the house works extrait de parfum at 40% concentration and claims an entirely hand-made production. Its company carries a name that states the programme: essenze&poesia — essences and poetry.

FOMOWA PARIS 5 fragrances

Three brothers founded the house in Paris. Each fragrance starts from one precise pastry and looks for its smell rather than its idea. The compositions are entrusted to Parisian noses, whom the house does not name.

FRÉDÉRIC MALLE 6 fragrances

This is not a brand but a publishing house for perfumes — Frédéric Malle founded it in 2000. The perfumer signs as an author, name on the bottle: Maurice Roucel for Musc Ravageur, Pierre Bourdon for French Lover, Dominique Ropion for Portrait of a Lady.

GIARDINI DI TOSCANA 4 fragrances

The house is Tuscan, based in Bibbiena, in the province of Arezzo. Silvia Martinelli is its nose. It calls itself the heir to a family tradition running through four generations.

HISTOIRES DE PARFUMS 10 fragrances

Gérald Ghislain founded his house in Paris in 2000 and shelves his perfumes like books: each bottle sleeps in a volume-shaped case, spine out, notes printed on the back. The first ones carry a date — the birth year of a figure who unsettled their century. The house composes and bottles in France, and offers two sizes only, 60 and 120 ml.

HOUBIGANT 7 fragrances

Jean-François Houbigant opened in 1775, on rue du Faubourg-Saint-Honoré. The house created Fougère Royale in 1882 and Quelques Fleurs in 1912, and counted Queen Victoria and then Czar Alexander III among its clients. Paul Parquet, then Robert Bienaimé, were its perfumers.

JOUSSET PARFUMS 12 fragrances

A French house born in 2020. Jimmy Bodin, co-founder and perfumer, composes and makes in his own atelier. He claims a term of his own, Ultra-Gourmand: texture and taste before the flower.

JUL ET MAD 4 fragrances

Madalina holds the creation, Julien holds the house; they founded theirs in Paris in 2011. The collection was born of their meeting and reads as such. The fragrances are extraits.

L’ARTISAN PARFUMEUR 7 fragrances

Jean Laporte had first found a vocation as a botanist. He opened in 1976, among the first of modern niche perfumery. The house presents Mûre et Musc, in 1978, as the first fragrance to bring out the red-fruit note of a white musk.

MARC ANTOINE BARROIS 2 fragrances

At Sarzana, in Liguria, the house writes its fragrances the way one writes texts. It makes a principle of it: everything begins with feeling — perfume, memory and emotion.

NAOMI GOODSIR 2 fragrances

Naomi Goodsir is an Australian milliner: she makes hats and accessories by hand, and works from France. Her fragrances are composed with Bertrand Duchaufour and Renaud Coutaudier.
