Nice Bergamote — Essential Parfums

Composed by Antoine Maisondieu, Nice Bergamote builds a citrus floral around Calabrian bergamot, a heart of orange blossom lifted by jasmine and ylang-ylang, and a base of Haitian vetiver. That vetiver is what makes the difference in summer: it carries the citrus freshness long after the top notes have flown, without ever weighing the composition down. The bottle is also refillable.

Acqua di Sale — Profumum Roma

The marine extrait de parfum by Profumum Roma recreates salt-dried skin after a swim: salt, seaweed and myrtle over a Virginia cedar base. The extrait concentration, unusual for a marine register, gives it remarkable staying power on warm skin — two or three sprays last the day. It is the Roman house’s answer to Mediterranean summers.

Summer Hammer — Lorenzo Pazzaglia

Summer Hammer is an unapologetic tropical fruity in extrait concentration: mango on top, coconut at heart, Haitian vetiver in the base. The vetiver keeps the coconut from turning creamy and keeps the whole saline and solar — more jetty than dessert. It is one of the two perfumes in this selection whose product page lists summer as the sole recommended season.

Pomelo Oolong — D’Annam

With Pomelo Oolong, the Vietnamese house D’Annam signs a citrus floral of great precision: pomelo on top, jasmine at heart, oolong tea in the base. The tea brings a tannic freshness that endures in the heat where a citrus alone would evaporate, and the jasmine bridges the two. A unisex, discreet and precise perfume, as suited to the office as to summer evenings.

Van Sea — Lorenzo Pazzaglia

Van Sea, by the same perfumer, is the other extrait in this selection whose page recommends summer alone: marine notes on top, Madagascar vanilla at heart, sandalwood in the base. It is a gourmand amber, which ought to disqualify it in August — except that the saline note keeps the vanilla in check and stops it thickening. The olfactory family does not decide the season; the construction does.

With Wavechild, Jérôme di Marino composes a fruity aquatic built on an ozonic accord: mandarin on top, watermelon at heart, ambergris in the base. Watermelon, the watery note par excellence, sustains a continuous sensation of freshness; the ambergris anchors it all with a light salinity.

Borabora — Giardini di Toscana

For those who prefer the solar summer to the fresh one, Borabora (Silvia Martinelli) unfolds a gourmand tropical floral accord: tiare flower and ylang-ylang, coconut milk, a base of vanilla and amber. This is the monoï register, treated as fine perfumery — an unapologetic beach perfume, best worn at the end of the day, when the heat subsides and the milky notes reveal their full roundness.

Fresh or solar: two different summers
